CRNBC Board Highlights

The following provides highlights of key decisions made by the CRNBC Board on June 14, 2012. As of May 2012, approved board minutes are published online.

Revised Professional Standards

The College has revised the Professional Standards for Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners, which will take effect November 1, 2012. View the revised standards

Updated Practice Standard: Duty to Provide Care

The College has revised the Duty to Provide Care Practice Standard. View the revised standard

NP Scope of Practice Changes

The board approved the following:

Effective July 26, 2012:

• Full prescriptive authority to prescribe Hemostatic agents and IV Iron preparations (AHFS 20:00 Category 5: Blood Formers and Coagulators)

• Full prescriptive authority to prescribe Immunosuppressants (AHFS 92:00 Category 20: Miscellaneous)

• Nurse practitioners have authority to reduce anterior shoulder dislocations on the condition that the NP has the competence to interpret the x-ray if clinically indicated.

• The NPSC considered a request to give NPs authority to order a hystero-salpingogram. Upon review of the evidence provided, NPSC did not recommend a change to NP authority. NPs do not order this test.

Proposed Bylaw Amendments Impacting NP Registration

The proposed amendments to the College's Bylaws drafted in consultation with the College's legal counsel and the Ministry of Health provide for two important shifts in the regulatory framework for nurse practitioners. More information

College AGM

The College's annual general meeting was held at the College on June 15. Read the message from the board

Interim Chair and Vice-Chair

The board appointed Barb Crook to serve as Interim Chair between September 1 and the third week of September. It also appointed Eleanor Elston to serve as Interim Vice-Chair during the same period. In keeping with College bylaws, the board will elect a Chair and Vice-Chair at its September meeting.
