Dispensing Medications Practice Standard

posted June 3, 2014

The revised Dispensing Medications practice standard comes into effect June 27, 2014.

This standard outlines the expectations for nurses when they dispense, and clarifies:

  • when dispensing occurs
  • that nurses may dispense with or without a pharmacist’s involvement
  • that nurses have additional responsibilities when a pharmacist is not involved
  • the steps nurses take to ensure the pharmaceutical and therapeutic suitability of a medication for its intended use

We have put together some resources to help nurses understand the revised standard, and will be adding more over the coming weeks and months, so check back often.
