New Policy for Exam Criteria

On March 28, 2012, the Board approved a policy that provides specific criteria for the new registered nurse entry-to-practice exam. The criteria must be met before a new exam will be endorsed by CRNBC.

Exam critieria:

  • The exam must reflect current entry-level registered nursing practice and be a credible assessment of entry-level competencies in B.C.
  • The exam and the associated processes must be psychometrically sound, valid, reliable and legally defensible.
  • The exam must be developed by exam experts and include an analysis of Canadian nursing practice. Canadian subject matter experts, including nurse educators, must participate in writing and reviewing the exam.
  • The College will review and approve the exam on a regular basis before it is administered. The College can remove parts of the exam.
  • The exam process and its administration must protect the candidates’ personal information. They must comply with Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, the British Columbia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and other relevant statutes.
  • The exam must have a security risk management program. This program must include security at the writing centre and data analysis and reporting.
  • The exam is accessible and offered in both English and French.
  • The exam is available throughout the year in B.C.
  • The exam results are available in a timely manner.
  • The exam costs are reasonable to both the College and exam candidates.

CRNBC and nine other Canadian registered nurse regulators are developing a contract with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). We will post more information about these negotiations on our website as it becomes available.
