Updates in effect Aug. 4, 2017

The CRNBC board June 16, 2017, approved three updates to the Scope of Practice for NPs:

  1. Regulatory Supervision of NP Student Activities: this update clarifies and sets out the requirements for nurse practitioners who are supervising nurse practitioner students performing restricted activities such as diagnosing diseases and disorders, ordering diagnostic tests and prescribing.
  2. Ordering Diagnostic Tests and Managing Results: this update reflects a move away from a list of diagnostic tests and introduces principle-based standards that set the requirements for nurse practitioners when ordering diagnostic services and managing test results;
  3. Advanced Procedures and Activities: this update introduces new standards and NP requirements when carrying out advanced procedures and coordinates standards and definitions with the BC Medical Quality Initiative (BCMQI) in the BC Health Authorities.

These changes have been incorporated into the Scope of Practice for NPs and are now in effect.
