Important WCB changes for NPs coming January 1

WorkSafeBC is introducing new rules that affect NPs.

posted Sept. 4, 2014

Background

On March 10, 2014, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General introduced Bill 17, Miscellaneous Statutes Amendment Act, 2014, with amendments to the Workers Compensation Act, including expanding the current definition of qualified practitioner to include NPs.

Important changes coming in January for NPs

Effective January 1, 2015 nurse practitioners will have new responsibilities when seeing injured workers with a WorkSafeBC (WCB) claim. WCB has created an information page for NPs about working with WorkSafeBC. Watch the page for updates.

CRNBC’s Legislation Relevant to Nurses' Practice will be updated closer to the effective date.

A new, time-sensitive responsibility for NPs

One new responsibility of NPs will be to submit a report to WorkSafeBC within three (3) days of an office visit with an injured worker. The Nurse Practitioner’s Report (Form 8/11 NP) is crucial for establishing a claim for a newly injured worker. The form and submission details will be available on the WorkSafeBC website.
