Duty to Provide Care Practice Standard Updated

posted May 1, 2014

At its April 2014 meeting, the CRNBC Board approved a minor change to the emergency exemption outlined in the Practice Standard Duty to Provide Care. The RN and NP scope of practice documents will also be updated to reflect this change.

The emergency exemption now states that nurses do not provide care outside their scope of practice except in situations involving imminent risk of death or serious harm that arise unexpectedly and require urgent action. In addition, clarification is provided that employers and nurses should not rely on the emergency exemption when an activity is considered an expectation of practice in a particular setting.

The revised documents are now posted. Please email policy@crnbc.ca if you have questions.
