Certified Practice: revised DST and competencies updated

posted Oct. 1, 2014

Revisions to the Sexually Transmitted Infections Treatment of Contacts DST were approved in September 2014.

The Competencies for STI Certified Practice have also been updated. Be sure to replace any previous versions of this DST with the revised version.

Revisions

The Treatment of Contacts DST has been revised as follows:

  • Due to a shortage of cefixime, ceftriaxone (in combination with azithromycin or doxycycline) has been added as a second choice for contacts to Gonorrhea.
  • The diagnostic testing for contacts to Syphilis screening has changed from RPR to EIA (enzyme immune assay). RN(C)s are to complete “Syphilis screen” only on the requisition form. Confirmatory testing is now automated by the BC Public Health Microbiology Reference Lab and is based on the initial EIA results.

The Competencies for STI Certified Practice have been updated to reflect best practice. The following have been incorporated into the STI courses.

Knowledge of:

  • STI epidemiology, local surveillance and affected populations
  • trauma informed care /practice
  • available and accessible resources /services for affected populations

Please review and incorporate into your practice the revised DST as it outlines the current requirements for Sexually Transmitted Infections Certified Practice.
