The online course related to ordering blood and blood products is now available.

One of the conditions for nurse practitioners prescribing blood and blood products is completion of an online course called Bloody Easy. This course is now offered by a provincial agency, the Ontario Regional Blood Coordinating Network. Additionally, the course now reflects new developments in transfusion medicine.

The current 10 module course, version 3 takes 10 hours to complete and is free of charge. Registrants complete a series of post-tests after which a certificate of completion can be printed.

Limits and conditions

As before, NPs working in acute and/or associated specialty settings have full authority to order blood and blood products. NPs working in community settings are limited to continuation ordering authority. See the updated Scope of Practice for Nurse Practitioners: Standard, Limits and Conditions.

The limits and conditions for ordering blood and blood products are included in the Scope document (pages 19 and 20). Updated links are included in the Appendix (page 39).
