Controlled Drugs and Substances

February 18, 2013

We are ramping up policy work to support changes to federal controlled substance regulations, the New Classes of Practitioners Regulations. These new federal regulations open the door to the province enacting its own regulations that could eventually enable nurse practitioners to prescribe narcotics and controlled substances. Our policy work will engage NPs and others in developing approaches that ensure public protection. Stay tuned for more information.

Enactment of legislative changes takes time. It is important to understand that even though the changes were approved at the federal level, NPs are not yet authorized to prescribe narcotics and controlled substances in B.C. The final decision rests with our provincial Minister of Health.
