Identifying which diagnostic tests are within an NP's scope

If you are unsure whether a diagnostic test is within NP scope of practice, these are the steps to take:

  1. Check NP Scope of Practice. If any test under Miscellaneous Services or Imaging Services is not listed in these two sections for ordering diagnostic services, they must be ordered by a physician, e.g., hysterosalpingogram.
  2. If you are unsure if a particular test is on the Miscellaneous Services or Imaging Services lists of what an NP can order, clarify with Val Johnson, the Medical Services Plan (MSP) Billing Advisor familiar with the NP referral items.
  3. If there is a test that Val Johnson from MSP states NPs cannot order and you feel that it should be part of NP practice, the next option is to complete a Scope of Practice Review form for the College's Nurse Practitioner Standards Committee to review. That committee makes recommendations to the CRNBC Board for approval and then MSP considers if the test will be uploaded into data bank of tests NPs are authorized to order.
